Oorzaak: Built of wood in 1853 by pitcher & co, northfleet. owned at time of loss by john patton jr & co, london. a ship rigged sailing vessel. struck by ss 'murillo' at speed while at anchor and fully lit on a clear night. complement of 379 men, mainly railway workers and their families. 327 lives lost. murillo made off without stopping. could not be identified as no name was shown on the hull. murillo was arrested 8 months later. following this incedent vessels were required to carry their names on both sides and on the stern.
