NE 121. 8.6.09 DIVED 31.5.09, KNOWN LOCALLY AS "GRILL", AND FOUND TO BE AN OLD WK WITH AN OLD AFT COMPOUND ENGINE & SQUARE BOILER/S, THEREFORE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN BUILT AROUND 1865, AND NOT LIKELY TO BE DANA WHICH WAS BUILT IN 1883. STERN SECTION FAIRLY INTACT, STANDING WELL UP WITH LIST TO PORT & CONTAINS THE MACHINERY. SWEEPING COUNTERSTERN WITH 4 BLADED PROPELLER. ENGINE LOOKS LIKE AN EARLY COMPOUND TYPE WITH CYLINDERS OF A SIMILAR SIZE, AND HAS A BIG IRON WHEEL ATTACHED TO THE STARBOARD SIDE. THE BOILER/S, POSSIBLY TWO, IS OF SQUARE HAYSTACK TYPE. THE CASING HAS ROTTED AWAY IN MANY PLACES SHOWING A GAP DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE BOILER/S, THERE ARE ALSO GAPS IN THE TUBING AT EITHER SIDE. JUST FORWARD OF THE BOILER/S, ON THE PORT SIDE, IS A BRASS GRILL, 3 X 1FT, THOUGHT TO BE A SCUPPER. A WASH BASIN LIES ON THE SEABED.THE SIDES OF THE HOLDS HAVE FALLEN OUTWARDS AND ARE LEVEL WITH THE SEABED. NO EVIDENCE OF CARGO. BOW IS MORE INTACT, BUT HAS FALLEN BACKWARDS AND OVER TO STARBOARD. AT LEAST 3 ANCHORS WERE SEEN, AND THE REMAINS OF A WINDLASS WITH A WOODEN HUB WITH SQUARE PEG HOLES AROUND IT. SKETCH BY ANDY DOWSLAND. WRECK IS DISINTEGRATED WITH JUST AFT SECTION INTACT AND PROUD OF SEABED. BOILERS ARE STILL VISIBLE, SHOALEST POINT AT THE STERN, WITH STRONG MAGNETIC ANOMALY. (MMT, HI 1473).
